T: Good morning students! Glad to see you. I’m sure everybody is all right. Let’s make our lesson interesting and useful. The theme of our lesson is « Mass-Media».

What is it “mass media”, tell me please?

Today we are going to speak about some means of communicating. They are traditionally called the media.  The mass media actually rule the world and play a very important part in our lives.

And now tell me what types of mass-media do you know? Which sources of information mass media includes?

P:  I know TV, the Internet, newspapers, magazines and radio.

T: What types of mass-media do you use in your everyday life?

P: In my everyday life I usually use TV, the Internet, radio and newspapers.

T: So students, I see you know the main media. But what are their definitions?

Your task is to match the words and their definitions.

  6. a paper printed and sold usually daily or weekly with news, advertisements etc.;

T: Now let’s speak about the sources of information. Open your books on page 103 ex.2.

Look at the photos of the information sources and match them with the words. Speak about each of them. Use the questions as a plan.

  1. What is this information source called?
  2. How reliable/unreliable is it? Why?
  3. Is it interesting/boring?
  4. How often do you use it?
  5. What do you use it for? (homework/school reports/fun/hobby)

Which of these information sources are mass media?

T: Listen to the dialogue and answer the questions: Why is Misha sad? What mistake did Misha make?

Is the Internet a reliable information source?

What rules should you follow when you write a report?

Where will Misha be able to find information about David Beckham?

Why is it better to borrow newspapers and magazines from library?

T: Let’s do ex.5 on p.105. You need complete the sentences. Use the words in the box.

The mass media play an important part in our lives. Newspapers, radio and especially TV inform us of what is going on in this world and give us wonderful possibilities foe education and entertainment. They also shape our views and influence the way we see the world. There are a lot of different TV programs and newspapers : a quiz show, a review, a commentary, an entertainment program on TV and a quality newspaper (a broadsheet), a tabloid, a local paper etc.
Of course, not all TV programs and newspapers report the events objectively, but serious journalists and TV reporters try to be fair and prove us with reliable information.
It is true that the world today is full of dramatic events and most news seems to be bad news. But people aren’t interested in ordinary events. That’s why , there are so many programs and articles about natural disasters, plane crashes, wars, murders and robberies. Good news doesn’t usually make headlines. Bad news does.
Some people say that journalists are given too much freedom. They often intrude on peoples’ private lives, they follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them, which are untrue or half-true. They take photos of them in their most intimate moments. The question is- should this be allowed? Do you remember hoe paparazzi pursued Diana, Princess of Wales, to the scene of her death in Paris on August 31, 1997? Who was guilty of this accident? It is quite possible that journalists were, isn’t it?
The main course of news for millions people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that’s an important advantage. Seeing as we know is believing. Besides, it’s much more difficult for politicians to be in front of the cameras than on the pages of a newspaper. There isn’t any person in our country that hasn’t seen Savik Shuster’s TV talk show «Freedom of speech» is there?
Still, many people prefer the radio. It’s good to listen to in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house.
Newspapers don’t react to events as TV, but they usually provide us with extra details, comment and background information.
The Internet has become another important source of information. It’s main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don’t have to wait for news on TV
